A man goes to see a doctor complaining about back problems, the doctor ask him about his pain and were it is located; they take x-rays and do a complete physical on the man. After this is done the doctor tells the man I have located the source of you pain and discomfort in you back. You are not going to need surgery, but you will need physical therapy to correct the problem and relieve your pain. The man is happy that he does not need surgery he takes the referral the doctor gives him to start his physical therapy and he leaves. Six months later the man is back in the doctor’s office complaining that his back pain is now worse than ever, the doctor is shocked, the doctor asked the man if the therapy has helped at all? To the doctors surprise the man never started physical therapy he just ignored the doctor’s prescription.

This story about the man and the doctor is from my own imagination, but it is true none the less. We have God’s word that gives us the perfect prescription for life yet we don’t fill it, we don’t take it, and we wonder why there is no change. There has to be action in our lives as believers we need to examine what God is speaking to us through the bible, and then apply that to our lives. People have told me the reason why they are not Christ followers today, is because they see no difference in people that call themselves Christians and those who do not. Now I think this type of an attitude is a cop-out, none the less it leaves a bad taste to the world around us when we speak these things about this great God, and show no resemblance to him at all.

Think about it we are to be the sons of God. There should be some resemblance. I have four children and guess what you can tell they are my children, they resemble me. We need to resemble God, this is why the early church was so successful it resembled Jesus Christ and continued to make an impact in the world. God’s word gives us the prescription we need to look more, and more like him.

So what’s the deal, the deal is, we too many times are looking for answers, searching for truth in our lives only to find it and not apply it. For the Christ follower we must understand that the world around us could carless how much we know about the bible, or Old Testament history, that might impress your Christian friend but that is not saving anybody. The truth is the world wants to see are you taking the medicine you are trying to push on others, and does it work simple as that. Make a point to read the word of God, let his words mold us to resemble him and make an effort to apply what you read to your life.

“God has made all things depend on faith so that whoever has faith will have everything and whoever does not have faith will have nothing.” ~Martin Luther.

I was wrestling with the concept of design. What I mean by design is, I believe that God has a purpose in all of lives that we are all uniquely design to do. No one else can do it; it is special to each of us. What I was questioning was not that I was formed and design by God, but what that thing was that he had for me to do, or is it just one thing.

See when I turned my life over to God I felt a strong pulling to devote my life to fulltime vocational ministry, but that was over eleven years ago, I have grown and matured, gained more biblical knowledge, God could not have created me just for the purpose of ministry truly it is just a choice right? This was the question that I was wrestling with; this began to become a burden to me. So I did what any good Christian would do I came to the conclusion that we are all called to ministry and that God could not have formed and design ME specifically for that since he calls all his believers to that right?

Since everyone of us are called to be ministers of reconciliation to the world, I then started looking for what I would devote my life to as far as a career. I looked, and looked, and looked some more. In the end it always came back to I am doing this for the money not because it is my passion. Ok what is my passion I love helping people and serving those who are in need, my heart breaks for the single mother, and the kids who don’t have a father in their life. My heart breaks that there are people who if they would only come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ would not have to live in hell any longer. It took another Christian tell me that it was up to me to be the one to tell those about the God who had saved me and brought sanity to my life, and if I would not tell them then who would. Wow that is when it hit me I was created for the purpose of being Gods mouth piece. God had designed me for this but a lack of faith had prevented me from acting on it.

Matthew 14:22-31Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

I remember reading this story and being so confused, how could Peter call out and hear the Lords voice, get out of the boat and start walking to Jesus on the water, and then let some wind and waves cause him to doubt and begin to sink. How could this happen. Easy Peter took his eyes of the Lord and looked at the impossibility of his situation. I should not be out here in this sea walking on the water this is crazy I am going to die. I use to think it was crazy I would have never doubted, no I would have never even gotten out of the boat.

Jesus Christ showed himself to me just as he did with Peter. Yes Peter saw him as a man face to face, but I have seen the works of his hands with my own eyes and I still doubted. The Lord called to Peter and he doubted, the Lord called me and I doubted. How about you, what are you and God wrestling about, what is God calling you to that seems so impossible? Whatever it is you must trust that it is the best thing for you. God does not need more armchair quarterbacks; he need men and women to answer Gods call and get in the game.

Will you answer his call and get out of the boat?

King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold that was in his likeness. He sent a decree thought the land that when the people heard the music they were to stop what they were doing and bow down and worship the statute of the king. Whoever did not bow down and worship the king would be thrown into a blazing furnace. So the music starts playing and all the people bow down and worship the statue except for three Jewish boys name Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. The king’s astrologers came to him and told the king that the three boys refused to bow down and worship his image, the young me that the king had promoted to roles of leadership in his kingdom.

The king was furious he called the boys to him and we read in Daniel 3:14 “Is it true that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up? Now when you hear the music, and are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hands?”

This is how our world operates, not some of the time but all the time. When we refuse to bow down and worship the world it gives us an ultimatum, bow down or die! Now the world we live in is not the world the Jewish people found themselves in during Babylonian captivity, there are no blazing furnace being stoked for us. There are loss relationships that can burn just as much. If we take Christianity seriously, we must also take the words of Christ to heart as well. They hated me so they will hate you. How we respond when the furnace is hot speaks louder than any message from any pulpit. You never know who is watching, who is looking, to see our faith inaction.

Daniel 3:16 “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know O king that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

Well the king was beyond mad now he told his men to make the furnace as hot as it can be and to throw the boys into it. They made that furnace so hot that the men that threw the boys into the furnace also died. Now look at what happened next. God happen. The king jumped to his feet and asked an advisor did we not throw in three boys? The advisor told him yes the how is there now four walking around unharmed, not burned. Then the king shouted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, Servants of the Most High God come out! Then the king made anew decree that day saying no other god can save this way. If we want to introduce the world to the one true God, the only god who can save, we must be acquainted with him ourselves. Let’s not give into the pressure to just bow down to the world, let’s stand in the mist of the fiery furnace and show that our God is a God who truly saves.

In the book “The Jesus You Can’t Ignore” John MacArthur wanted to show from scripture how the Jesus some of our current-day churches have minimized to a meek and mild Messiah is not the full portrayal of Jesus. He is certainly meek and mild, but He is also confrontational and did not allow distortion of truth to get in the way of the gospel message. This is made clear numerous times in the Gospels how he dealt with the Pharisees by and the old Jewish laws.

I found this to be a great book, the way the author laid out the Gospels to gain a better understand of how Jesus’ three year ministry progressed. Each chapter highlighted different miracles of Jesus, and then expounds on what was going on between the Pharisees and Jesus. I enjoyed MacArthur’s chapter on the Sermon on the Mount as he explained the meaning of Jesus’ points and why He was preaching those specific truths on that day.
If you’ve never read a book by John MacArthur, this would be a great book to start with. I would recommend this book. I believe it can help you to see Jesus from a different perspective, a part of His character that really cannot be ignored, and should not be overlooked.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Christianity offers the only viable, reasonable, definitive answer to the questions of ‘Where did I come from?’ ‘Why am I here?’ ‘Where am I going?’ ‘Does life have any meaningful purpose?’ Only Christianity offers a way to understand that physical and moral border. Only Christianity offers a comprehensive worldview that covers all areas of life and thought, every aspect of creation. Only Christianity offers a way to live in response to the realities that we find in this world — only Christianity.” ~Tom Delay

I have had the opportunity to speak to junior high and high school kids this summer and I would have to say that today’s youth are looking for what is real, what will answer the questions that they have for their life. They need to know that Christianity offers not just a way to live, but a better way to live this life here on earth.

I recently spoke to a mixed audience of young adults ages 12 to 18 and I had them look around at each other, I told them right next to you might be a mentor mentee relationship just waiting to happen. I told them giving of yourself, making yourself available is the best way to help another person, the person younger than you is looking to you for direction and guidance even if you don’t know it.

I know plenty of people my age early thirties; have the house, the wife, the kids, and the good job. Most of them are pressing into life keeping their nose to the grind stone so to speak, and this is a good thing, but is there time for someone else are they giving their time to something bigger than themselves. What about the Church?

There is a generation out there looking at us to see if this Jesus we are so happy to throw in peoples face is real, can he change a life, can he heal a broken marriage, can he take away the pain of abuse. Does this Jesus really hear my prayers, and what are they going to see, are they going to see us going about our lives as usual, will they see us just doing church. Or will they see us being the church, living out the faith that bleeds out of Jesus’ vein for you and me. Will they see a faith that lead a doubter to become a martyr, will they see the same love we show for those like us given to those we feel are beneath us.

A generation is watching waiting for the church to be the hope of the world; the only question is what they will see.

So last week I came back from lunch and there was a message that someone had called and wanted to know if one of the ministers could come and say a prayer at a funeral. So I asked who died, it was nobody from our church; they did not even live in Illinois, they had family here and would be buried at Abraham Lincoln cemetery.

So I said I would do it, I called the number and spoke with a lady who ended up being the daughter of the man who passed away. It ended up being a tragic car crash that took this 77 year old husband, father, and grandfather’s life. The daughter began to explain to me that her father had no faith of his own but some of the family is Christian and some are Jewish, and he wanted both faiths represented at his funeral to accommodate everyone.

I told her that I would be happy to be a part of the service and say a closing prayer. Friday comes and I go out to the memorial service and the rabbi does the eulogy, and does a good job, until he starts talking about faith and our eternal destiny. He gave the family no hope of an afterlife, he even said some believe in life after death in a paradise of some sorts, and some believe we will just do it all again no one can know for sure.

What this is the best you can do this is the best that can be said, right there in front of us is a man lifeless another casualty of sin and the fallen nature of man, and the best we can offer up is we cannot know for sure. That moment made it clear why I chose to go into ministry, why I want to devote myself to the teaching and preaching of God’s word.

In God’s word he gives us the answers; he gives us the faith and assurance of a glorious life beyond compare after this life. These people were left to grieve as we all do at the lost of a loved one, but if we are Christ followers we know that the Jesus has conquered death and the sting of death only last but a moment because there are greater things in store for us in the eternity that waits for us.

Everyday people take their last breaths and eternity a waits them, let us not grow weary in well doing, let us continue to be the church, the light of the world, and the hope to all nations. Hopefully in fulfilling the great commission for our life, we may help usher others in to paradise.

We will be starting a Celebrate Recovery ministry here at Crossroads this spring.

So I have listed a little information about CR and how it works.

Celebrate Recovery was founded in 1991 by Pastor John Baker of Saddleback Church with the goal of overcoming habits like sex disorders and drug addictions with a twelve-step program based on Christian principles. Other churches and some prisons implemented the program, and as of March 2004 more than 150,000 people are said to have participated. At the Faith-Based and Community Initiative Conference in 2004, U.S. President George W. Bush praised Celebrate Recovery as being able to “change hearts” where government cannot.

Celebrate Recovery meetings are similar to those of other twelve-step programs, one difference is in their focus on Christianity. The program stresses that there is no other Higher Power except for Jesus, as opposed to groups like Alcoholics Anonymous which encourage members to choose their own concept of a Higher Power. Another difference is that Celebrate Recovery does not require one to conform to a singleness of purpose declaration, a member does not have to qualify oneself as an alcoholic, addict, or gambler—there are no requirements for membership. You may attend with a desire to work the steps for healing with any number of hurts, hang-ups or habits (compulsive behaviors).

Celebrate Recovery take advantage of the most power book ever written on compulsive behaviors, the Bible, and turn it loose on what we all struggle with SIN. It also does not label you into a certain group we are all sinners even though we may have never struggled with alcohol or drugs, we all have hurts, hang-ups, and habits that have not been beneficial for our lives. Celebrate Recovery allow people to do that celebrate the journey of recovery from a life of sin, and also equips people to help other do the same.

I look forward to starting this journey this spring and covet your prayer, and any encouragement you may offer.

Message by Rick Warren

The Bible clearly states “all have sinned.” It is my nature to sin, and it is yours too. None of us is untainted. Because of sin, we’ve all hurt ourselves, we’ve all hurt other people, and others have hurt us. This means each of us need repentance and recovery in order to live our lives the way God intended.

You’ve undoubtedly heard the expression that “time heals all wounds.” Unfortunately, it isn’t true. As a pastor I frequently talk with people who are still carrying hurts from 30 or 40 years ago. The truth is – time often makes things worse. Wounds that are left untended fester and spread infection throughout your entire body. Time only extends the pain if the problem isn’t dealt with.

What we need is a biblical and balanced program to help people overcome their hurts, habits and hang-ups. Celebrate Recovery is that program. Based on the actual words of Jesus rather than psychological theory, our recovery program is unique, and more effective in helping people change than anything else I’ve seen or heard of. Over the years I’ve witnessed how the Holy Spirit has used this program to transform literally thousands of lives at Saddleback Church and help people grow toward full Christlike maturity.

Most people are familiar with the classic 12 step program of A.A. and other groups. While undoubtedly many lives have been helped through the twelve steps, I’ve always been uncomfortable with that program’s vagueness about the nature of God, the saving power of Jesus Christ, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. So I began an intense study of the Scriptures to discover what God had to say about “recovery.” To my amazement, I found the principles of recovery, and even their logical order, given by Christ in his most famous message, the Sermon on the Mount.

My study resulted in a ten-week series of messages called “The Road to Recovery.” During that series, my Associate Pastor John Baker developed the workbooks, which became the heart of our Celebrate Recovery program. I believe that this program is unlike any recovery program you may have seen. There are seven features that make it unique:

This recovery program is based on God’s Word, the Bible. When Jesus taught the Sermon on the Mount, he began by stating “Eight Ways to Be Happy.” Today we call them the Beatitudes. From a conventional viewpoint, most of these statements didn’t make sense. They sounded like contradictions. But when you fully understand what Jesus is saying, you’ll realize that these eight principles are God’s road to recovery, wholeness, growth, and spiritual maturity.

This recovery program is forward-looking. Rather than wallowing in the past, or dredging up and rehearsing painful memories over and over, Celebrate Recovery focuses on the future. Regardless of what has already happened, the solution is to start making wise choices now and depend on Christ’s power to help me make those changes.

This recovery program emphasizes personal responsibility. Instead of playing the “accuse and excuse” game of victimization, this program helps people face up to their own poor choices and deal with what they can do something about. We cannot control all that happens to us. But we can control how we respond to everything. That is a secret of happiness. When we stop wasting time fixing the blame, we have more energy to fix the problem. When you stop hiding your own faults and stop hurling accusations at others, then the healing power of Christ can begin working in your mind, will, and emotions.

This recovery program emphasized spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ. The 3rd principle calls for people to make a total surrender of their lives to Christ. Lasting recovery cannot happen without this step. Everybody needs Jesus. Celebrate Recovery is thoroughly evangelistic in nature. In fact, the first time I took our entire church through this program over 500 people prayed to receiver Christ on a single weekend. It was an amazing spiritual harvest. And during the ten week series that I preached to kick-off this program, our attendance grew by over 1,500 people! Don’t be surprised if this program becomes the most effective outreach ministry in your church. Today, nearly 73% of the people who’ve been through Celebrate Recovery have come from outside our church. Changed lives always attract others who want to be changed.

This recovery program utilizes the biblical truth that we need each other in order to grow spiritually and emotionally. It is built around small group interaction and the fellowship of a caring community. There are many therapies, growth programs, and counselors today that are built around one-on-one interaction. But Celebrate Recovery is built on the New Testament principle that we don’t get well by ourselves. We need each other. Fellowship and accountability are two important components of spiritual growth. If your church is interested in starting small groups, this is a great way to get started.

This recovery program addresses all types of habits, hurts and hang-ups. Some recovery programs deal only with alcohol or drugs or another single problem. But Celebrate Recovery is a “large umbrella” program under which a limitless number of issues can be dealt with. At Saddleback Church, only one out of three who attend Celebrate Recovery are dealing with alcohol or drugs. We have dozens of other specialized groups too.

Finally, this recovery program produces lay ministers! Because Celebrate Recovery is biblical and church-based, it produces a continuous stream of people moving into ministry after they’ve found recovery in Christ. Eighty-five percent of the people who’ve gone through the program are now active members of Saddleback Church, and an amazing 42% are now using their gifts and talents serving the Lord in some capacity in our church.

In closing, let me say that the size of your church is no barrier to beginning a Celebrate Recovery ministry. You can start it with just a small group of people and watch it grow by word-of-mouth. You won’t be able to keep it a secret for long!

Jesus demonstrated his willingness, to yield to this life of sacrifice, throughout his entire existence. Ephesians 5:2 states “Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

“While on earth Jesus was always about His “Father’s business”, He never veered from His mission because He was constantly focused on loving God and ministering to His people.
Mark 10:45 records that Jesus “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Christ was submitted to His Father and to His will, even though it meant enduring physical pain, facing rejection, bearing the sins of all humanity, and succumbing to a tortuous death.

Though Jesus knew the cost of living a life of sacrificial love, He also knew the eternal rewards for being obedient

Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”

God is calling you I to a life of sacrifice, to go wherever He takes us, to minister to whomever He brings us to, and to go whenever He asks us to go. Remember, life is an adventure and if you allow the Lord to pilot your life it will be an unforgettable journey beyond our imagination. Jesus is ALL IN . . . are you?

No humans allowed now that is a thought, could you imagine walking outside and seeing a sign that said that. How would that make you feel, what hope would you have, what kind of world would that be to live in were because you are human you are not allowed or treated with respect.

What if because we were humans we were enslaved and force to be tortured, brutalized, and ostracized? What would we do, would we just take it, give in or would we do something about it.

My guess would be that we would band together, black, brown, white, all of us, all HUMANS would stand up and demand our freedom, we would work together to defeat the evil that is attempting to keep us in slaved. See it would not matter the color of our skin, it would not matter our social economical back ground, it would not matter if we were democrat or republican, the only thing that would matter is that we would be humans fighting for other humans.

Now there may never be a day that you read a sign that says no humans allowed, but we are all human are we not, but look at the news, the current racial climate in America today. We are bickering once again about race and racial equality, this is crazy we are all humans; we all breathe, eat, and sleep. We all have the capacity to give and receive love, but at time it seems like we are all aliens to each other.

There will always be diversity in the human race, and this is what makes us the crowning jewel of God’s creation. This diversity should be celebrated not segregated, why after the civil rights movement, and a civil war are we still not able to live in peace, and tolerance to those of different pigment than ours.

The question is simple if we are all humans, if we all have the basic needs as humans why do we treat each other the way we do. This is not the first time this question has been raised in 1948 world leaders meet to come up with the International Bill of Human Rights they are as follows:

Preamble

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in cooperation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, therefore,

The General Assembly,

Proclaims this Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

As some of you may or may not know I am a worship leader at my church, Crossroads Christian Church, and this week I wrote a new song called live to worship. I got the inspiration for our current sermon series After God’s Heart a study of the life of David, and what I love about David is that no matter how good his life was or how bad he lived to worship God.

See David understood as a young man that if we really worship God with our whole heart that God is able to do great thing for us and through us. So here are the lyrics and a video of the song hope you like it.

Through his love he has rescued me rescued me

Through his love he has pardoned me pardoned me

On his name we can place our trust place our trust

By his grace we can truly live truly live

O Lord my rock and redeemer

Let our words praise your name forever

Your love has ransomed me

Your love has set me free

I live to worship you

Your love is amazing grace

And I will never be the same

I live to worship you

In his word we can find relief find relief

In his arms we find the strength we need strength we need

His voice is the comfort that we seek that we seek

By his blood we are finally free finally free
