A man goes to see a doctor complaining about back problems, the doctor ask him about his pain and were it is located; they take x-rays and do a complete physical on the man. After this is done the doctor tells the man I have located the source of you pain and discomfort in you back. You are not going to need surgery, but you will need physical therapy to correct the problem and relieve your pain. The man is happy that he does not need surgery he takes the referral the doctor gives him to start his physical therapy and he leaves. Six months later the man is back in the doctor’s office complaining that his back pain is now worse than ever, the doctor is shocked, the doctor asked the man if the therapy has helped at all? To the doctors surprise the man never started physical therapy he just ignored the doctor’s prescription.
This story about the man and the doctor is from my own imagination, but it is true none the less. We have God’s word that gives us the perfect prescription for life yet we don’t fill it, we don’t take it, and we wonder why there is no change. There has to be action in our lives as believers we need to examine what God is speaking to us through the bible, and then apply that to our lives. People have told me the reason why they are not Christ followers today, is because they see no difference in people that call themselves Christians and those who do not. Now I think this type of an attitude is a cop-out, none the less it leaves a bad taste to the world around us when we speak these things about this great God, and show no resemblance to him at all.
Think about it we are to be the sons of God. There should be some resemblance. I have four children and guess what you can tell they are my children, they resemble me. We need to resemble God, this is why the early church was so successful it resembled Jesus Christ and continued to make an impact in the world. God’s word gives us the prescription we need to look more, and more like him.
So what’s the deal, the deal is, we too many times are looking for answers, searching for truth in our lives only to find it and not apply it. For the Christ follower we must understand that the world around us could carless how much we know about the bible, or Old Testament history, that might impress your Christian friend but that is not saving anybody. The truth is the world wants to see are you taking the medicine you are trying to push on others, and does it work simple as that. Make a point to read the word of God, let his words mold us to resemble him and make an effort to apply what you read to your life.
